Encaustic Art
Sarka has been close to the nature almost all her life. Therefore sustainable
living, zero-waste and being environmentally friendly is the key in her life. She has been amazed by microscopic views of plants and immersed herself into learning about them. Her focus is mainly to New Zealand
plants. She was looking for a medium which could meet her
criteria for sustainable living and allows her to create texture. She then
started adding beeswax into her paintings. Therefore, she has started encaustic paintings which are based on natural sources
just as plants are. Trying to express the process of growing and inspired by what is inside.
Encaustic
is an ancient technique. It uses beeswax mixed with dammar gum and
pigment. Encaustic can be applied as hot-wax or cold-wax technique. Sarka's
first touch with encaustic medium was at high school where she used cold-wax technique with fusing afterwards.
